THIS IS PART 4 READ THE OTHER PARTS HERE OK THANKS

Now I will finally be going into my actual art entries for Friend Facts.

The first question: Why did you choose to draw Stranger?

All the way back in November 2024, I was the very first art application, and I mostly did it for fun to check out the system because I was already a mod. I got to choose any character I wanted out of all of the NPCs, and while there were a few I considered, I knew I had to choose Stranger. I was invited because Skylar liked my Stranger essay, so it was thematically fitting. And you really couldn't argue he wasn't my favorite character at the time!

When the project first started, "reltelling of Omori" wasn't the goal yet. Stranger was supposed to have just 1 entry, like all the other main characters. But then I said we should add boss fight Stranger as a distinct character, and then the Truth sequence Stranger as another, and that the entire video should be a retelling of Omori. So one stranger turned into 6 which turned into 8. Which is whyyy I ended up with so many.

If I was going to draw six of them though, I wanted to have some fun concepts behind them!

The Strangers we decided on adding were when you see him at the end of each Headspace sequence (so none of the middle parts like him appearing on the vast forest island or humphrey) and when he brings you to Black Space.

I had three main ideas:

One: Draw them as though they are aging. Stranger is drawn inconsistantly in official art (a fact I hope to point out in Part 2 of the Stranger essay), sometimes in Basil's Headspace outfit and sometimes in his Faraway outfit. So I wanted both represented. The first two, when Sunny is furthest from the truth, he looks most like Headspace Basil. 12 with overalls. The second two, he looks like how Basil did at 12 when he was farthest from the truth. And the last two, he looks like how Basil does in the present tense.

Two: Have him slowly turn around to be more open. This isn't exactly how it panned out? But it's close, with the first having his back turned on you and the last fully looking at you. The only problem one is the third really.

Three: All of them should be in different artstyles. Except the first two because they're right next to each other.

I also love trying to draw Stranger differently every time I make a picture of him! You see it in my older art

[my post boi]

I've shared some of these before! Good times, good times. There are just many different ways people draw Stranger, especially in coloring, weather you use gray or black or silohettes or outlines or full lineart and if it's white or black or blue or rainbow. I wanted to continue that trend, making sure all of mine were distinct in some way.

I drew all these over the course of maany months because as you can tell from my last Friend Facts post in this series, I was very busy and the Strangers were something I did alone and thus their deadline wasn't that important, VS the other ones that were collaborations with other people.

Now I'm gonna go through them one by one.

The writing went through a lot of iterations... To make it fit best with the story in the video, it turned into being about how the Friends absolutely 100% totally can't see him. SNO-CONES are also mentioned because it gets snowey around this area!

I didn't record drawing any of these, so I don't have speedpaints. but I DO have all the layers, so I made a gif of aproximately how I colored it!

You can also pretty clearly see the sort of hair wobble and feet going up and down thing I did.

This one had two key inspirations. My coloring comes from Otherworld in general but especially fanart where Stranger is drawn with all white lines for all of his body and clothes, like this edit by Penta who happens to be in Friend Facts lol

I am a big fan of the purple and pink shades of Otherworld and like including sparkles in a lot of my art so I thought I could get away with making Stranger pink purple sparkly bc of semitransparency. The other inspiration was from Ysther's fun sketch here

I got accused of tracing on Twitter and it really got my goat so I am going to BRIEFLY go over it here. To be clear I was already halfway through making this post when that got made, where my sources of inspiration were all credited.

I tried to line them up to the best line of action to make the shoulders fit and it just shows how very notttt traced it is. If you made ysther's art smaller then you might get the shoes to fit better but he's not even wearing shoes and the angle is clearly different!

I even made the original brighter so that you can play spot the difference easier.

In case you need a list: Since he's meant to be younger, he's shorter. The legs are differently shaped with a simpler bubble instead of the well defined anatomy. He is wearing completely different clothes. The pants are at a different angle. The fingers are much pointier and he has no key. His head is larger because that is just how I draw heads, and again, scale for Basil. The hair is a completely different shape. The COLORS are completely original, and, of course, it is animated!

"But what about the bloody footprints!"

That's from the canonical Omori. Stranger leaves footprints everywhere around Headspace as hints to get to Black Space. That is what he does.

The only similarity they have is the pose. Everything else is completely originally my idea. The original version of this post was always going to include Ysther's art, talking about it and linking it as an important reference, but now I feel so dismissed I had to turn it defensive instead.

As much as I understand the impulse I just cannot agree that taking inspiration from a pose and that alone is enough to constitute "stealing". I do feel bad for how similar it looks when pointed out, but mostly because I feel like it makes my work seem less legitimate to people- how I could've made an image with a similar effect without pulling myself into question- not out of any sort of regret towards Ysther. I would try to make ammends if Ysther contacted me personally, but I would not be able to offer a sincere apology because I do not think it is stealing to use a pose as a reference even if it is of the same character. It would be if it were tracing, but it's not.

Ok! Stranger 1 over

Otherworld 2 goes next to the first one, so it has the same style.

WIP progression:

This one took a LOT more sketches and time to figure out. I wanted the viewer to see his eye, but all the versions where he was facing away looked better to me haha. Plus if I turned his head too much his neck looked broken...

The first version had really thick lines, and it annoyed me that it didn't look as nicely colored as the first one so I went back and redid them... I also didn't like the eye wasn't circular.

Onto the next

I really like how the pink contrasts on this one!!! Sketch progression time

I remember REALLY not liking this ones coloring as I was working on it. I felt like it looked, like, bad, uninteresting somehow. So I added a Color Burn paper on top of them and instantly looooved it. Where'd I get the idea? Omori! Omori the video game does that a lot! I also sometimes do color burn with paper texture, like, in general!

This one also got accused of being a copy... Same post

I found this comparison annoying... Like I can see it, for sure, that ear looks similar. But this isn't even like the last one where the pose is totally the same... The legs are pointing differently, the shoes are different, the pants are pointed, the arms are both drawn in ways neither in the original are. It's not bended. The hair once side by side is obviously a lot spikier.

The last one was also accused of being a copy of this image as well and at this point especially when compared to the Otherworld one I don't see any comparison other than "The hair is in a vaguely similar sharp style and they are facing the same direction"...

Maybe I should be complimented that my art looks so similar to Ysther's aparently even when it's not even similar??? I've always been good at absorbing artstyles but I never thought it'd get to the point of being called a tracer.

Next Basil, for the Lost Library!

The "..." from "- ???" is included because if you're able to talk to him in game it's the first time you can see his dialogue portrait, but he doesn't say anything.

The hair is drawn far more neat here and there's a lotttt of shades of ultramarines and purples, with a glitch overlay on top of it. While it was being drawn it was originally a gray image, but I was unsatisfied and the blues made it WAAAAY better to me immediately! Sometimes it's the final overlays that are wrong, as the last one taught me.

I wanted to draw Basil like how he looked on the day of the truth, which there are 3 places you can see it... The truth album, the boss rush jumpscare, and in one of the Hangman Key holes with a VHS tape of him. Which is also blue!

The problem is that his shirt is just kind of like a polo shirt which like. ok modern basil wears the uniform sweater vest, and even though you can see in the photo with the glass door reflection his shirt has two buttons... I added more because it really didn't look as different from his modern outfit as I wanted it to.

A different WIP of me watching between them as a concept. It facinated me! Ultimately the Basil frame wasn't used because why would it be, really, but I thought it was fun.

Another inspiration was this piano drawing that you can see fully on Twitter. I really only took the idea of him touching the piano, though.

I was accused of stealing it on Twitter and =_= Ok. You know what. I understand the first one, it looks very similar, I understand if you'd guess if it was traced. But this one? The original image is digitally painted, it is simply a silohette with hardly no internal detail. The hair is shaped like how it is in canon, with sharp points. The expression has almost like tilted eyebrows as if he is being judgemental. His shoulders are relaxed. The coloring and rendering is not at all the same. The original is only a halfbody. I could go on.

The only true time you would think this is "copied" is if you had never played Omori. This is a scene from the video game. The room is blue, Stranger stands in front of a piano, these two images are depicting the same thing but drawn in completely different ways by completely different artists.

OK. LAST TWO. And these two were not claimed to be copied thank fuck X_X

This one is one of my favorites! Though in the version I drew you can see the sunbeams better... It's a little disappointing you can't in the video, but the floating lights still look cool.

This one was VERRRYYY complicated rendering wise compared to the other ones, where it was flat and every part was colored the same way. I wanted at least one of the Strangers to look more """realistic""" with the regular shaped eyes.

Insta here

The two main references I used were the picture Meadow Basil was drawn by this incredible artist early in on the project. Mostly, I admired their lineart a lot! You can see similarities in the way I drew clothes folds so that it loops.

And this hand

Sue me.

Then the teal colors were based off of a lot of boss fight Basil fanart where he's blue, often teal or so. It turned out more pink because I was thinking of the colors of Basil house, and because pink + teal is reeeaally pretty.

The hand is outstretched because I thought it was important for him to look like he was inviting Omori to Black Space, like, "You should jump down". I think it's rather pretty for something that isn't onscreen for very long, haha

And of course the last one!

THE L;AST ONE Sky did a funny thing with the borders bc she thought it wasn't messed up enough otherwise

The GIF came out weird looking this time, but it's fine lol

With some of the money I got from Solstice I bought Photomosh Pro to do the effects. It's like a glitch video effects editor but it mostly is used for GIFs and still images. I used the free version a lot for years and WHATEVER... IM SURE I'LL GET USE OUT OF IT... It's not even well known enough to pirate lol

The three frames I used for Friend Facts were made individually with different levels of darkness so you could see some details of his shirt sometimes. I think it really creates that spooky silohette effect he has canonically, but with a lot more depth!

WOOHOOO I made it through them all. For fun I will also share the Strangers drawn by other artists

Boss Stranger drawn by Eli [Tumblr] [Twitter]. It is animated so see it here.

Eli is the one that ran the server where me and Skylar met each other, and is one of Strangers most active fans to date so we were really hoping Eli would apply at some point to get a chance at one of the spare Strangers. And she was! A lovely day for us all.

I was there to see the process of this one getting drawn and I was incredibly impressed. The breathing looks really heavy and natural and there's such obvious strain and monster elements while still being clearly human. The soft shading must have been really had to keep so consistant for that many frames!

I just like how everyone in the Red Space sequence was just absolutely killing it. So many animations and detailed pretty artworks all at once in both versions!

Drawn by Bird [Twitter], the full version is animated so watch it here

This version of Stranger is an odd one that interests me personally, where it is the shadow_basil sprite being used but the text box does say Basil. Only instance of like, Sunny admitting that that shadow is really Basil. It was helpful to include in the truth sequence as there really aren't that many "NPCs" in the traditional sense but it's not like we could mess up basically the best part of the game!! heheh.

The art itself is really good of course a more accurate drawing of what Basil wore that day and of course it being a full animation loop is wonderful. The tears look really nice and the red outline was an excellent choice.

The last one was kept a secret for as long as we could in order to surprise people in the video, heh

Hospital Stranger drawn by Ysther!!!! [Tumblr] [YouTube]

We were very happy that she agreed to it, given as I showed earlier she's definitely got to be my favorite Stranger artist and we were lucky to include her at all, and especially to give her a Stranger! Yay!

This assignment was a little odd haha. In the game, Stranger does appear in the hall and if you follow him you can get to the good ending/Basil's hospital room. We did want him in a hospital gown, but without any of Basil's injuries since while Sunny could figure Basil was in the hospital (might've overheard something about it...?) he wouldn't know what his injuries look like yet.

It's so heartfelt!! I mean. Literally clutching his heart. AUHG IT'S SO GOOD. Very good for the ending. yay. yay.

Now for the probable end of this 4 part series of posts...

I don't know at what point I'll feel like Friend Facts is "over". I've been working on it so long I feel like even after I unbookmark all the spreadsheets, after the folder disappears from quick access, after the server is closed and there's nothing to do, I'll keep thinking of ways to "add on". Part me keeps thinking we can just add more characters forever, add the locational birds, add some obscure sprout moles you can't even talk to in the theater, add more Basils, but there's no real reason to.

Of course this project has cost me an entire year of other, personal projects I could've done- TRAT hasn't been updated in a long time for example. But it's also cost me... like... real world money! Because days I never got a new job just so I didn't have to deal with that turbulance while working on this. There are days where I was texted if I could go in for some extra money, and even when I felt like it I was too busy with this. When I tell people who aren't in the fandom or in fandom in general about this project they always ask me if it's for like, money, or college or something. No! Just for fun!

It is the definition of a passion project. I just hope that it was, well, worth it. In some sense. That it might give some people some hope, or, y'know, happiness. That it made some people feel included. That it helped people make friends. And I hope me in the future likes to rewatch the video, also!

Ty for reading :3 Stranger nation forever!

Hey, if someone was going to draw Stranger it'd better be the person who actually understands him and has written a long essay explaining the nuance to others! XD

Ooo, now I get what you mean by him aging. That's right, his clothes are different and he loses more and more "childhood whimsy" with every iteration, by end of it he looks kind of scary with the piercing stare.

The person who accused you of tracing really doesn't seem like an artist, they just gave a quick glance to both, said "It's the same thing!" and didn't think to analyze it further.

Second Stranger's lineart is illuminated by the red light, hehe.
I remember the first version you did and how you remade it. That one really took more sketches to figure out, the third one also took a couple iterations.
And now those swirlies on Stranger's elbows and knees have migrated into TRAT!

Kel: "Where else could he even be??"
Stranger standing there: "It's literally me, I'm the guy from the picture."
-
The burnt paper texture gave him a subtle red or brown hue which looks pretty nice on the pink background. |D
The second comparison to Ysther's art is barely even similar. How else are you supposed to draw a person from the back?

"Maybe I should be complimented that my art looks so similar to Ysther's aparently even when it's not even similar???"
--
Lol, yeah, at this point it's a compliment to your art and style-absorbing skills. |P
It also should be a compliment to Ysther's art?? The proof that the inspiration from them is noticeable and other artist managed to translate it into their drawings??
People from Twitter shouldn't necessarily see that as a bad thing.

Fourth Stranger, he learned how to speak! \o/
It feels like he slowly gets more tangible with every time, now his body reflects the blue lighting and gained black lineart. His original brown color scheme was also nice!
It's symbolic that the Lost Library is in that ultramarine shade of blue. :'D

That time when you can be accused of portraying the same moment from the game as the different artist, lol. Next time they'll say you're guilty of drawing Stranger with white glowing eyes, an idea you totally stole from Ysther.

The fifth Stranger almost looks like he's meant to be Basil in photonegative colors, again he's getting more corporeal. I like his flowing hair with the way you separated it into segments and the clothing folds really look natural in that picture!

Considering that you often tried to avoid mentioning sun in entries I feel like the sunbeams are supposed to carry a deep meaning. It's Omori after all, everything carries a deep meaning! XD

Aaand then Stranger lost his lineart and went back to being a silhouette with eyes, the glitchy Stranger, the spookiest one. The details of his clothes are fading...

"I just like how everyone in the Red Space sequence was just absolutely killing it."
--
"Killing it" you say, hahaha.
Yeah, that Stranger looks pretty striking with the way his Something devours him while his arms are strained and seem to be clawing at the surface.

The Bird's Stranger has such smooth animation with the tears flowing down his face. :0

Woaaaah, Yster has drawn another Stranger!! In the hospital scene!
Suddenly this came full circle~

Awww, Friend Facts feeling like it took forever. It's the biggest collaboration in the Omori fandom it has to be worth it! And we got to participate in it!!
At least we made some memories together, I know I won't forget it. I agreed to do additional job for it because I wanted to spend time with my friends and it felt nice to work on something bigger. ✦
