HAPPY BIRTHDAY TULIP he is 1 year old. I think. For his birthday present I have drawn him some pictures under cut and also edited his first ever post significantly specifically just to censor a specific username so I can more confidently revisit it.

Omocat this year has been posting a lot of special birthday art! It's just the characters in cute alternate outfits in like some modern AU often with merch as well lolol. I was very excited for the birthday art of Sunny to appear and it very did not disappoint

I thought for cuteness sake, I'll make Tulip a birthday art as well! In the same styleee

This was a lot of fun to draw heheh. Tulip has never actually really been drawn in the Faraway style before and so coloring it got a little uncanny XD usually he doesn't look anything like Sunny but here where I very specifically tried to copy the same body proportions and colors everywhere it was like. AAA! lmao. Here's a bunch of notes about the drawing

- The eyeliner is canon lol
- The skirt felt like obvious idk I didn't think about it. I wanted him to look like some tacky disaster thing but cute XD
- garters are like gay or something (SUNNY'S LEGS ARE SO SKINNY)
- He just wears Sunny shoes lolol he might have some fun clothes but like he's not buying an entirely new pair of shoes bro. Also I just fine it cute
- He's got the yellow cat on his socks and bag because it feels like a very headspacey related character for him ? also headspace scrunchie. 2/3 of those are omocat merch
- Handbag because all the other omocat birthday arts give the characters some kind of bag or purse. This one is tiny bc he's not got much he has to do with it. Flower, star, heart pins and also a manga pin you can't make out lolol.
- Affaire Triump Tulip REAL
- The original sketches for this were more based on this old picrew my ex-friend said they'd eventually make into a whole picture but we're, err, not friends anymore, so I thought I'd do it myself.

I ended up straying rather far but as you can see the hairbands and stickers on the face stayed. It's also kind of partly a reference to how Tulip has a heart eye scar and Sunny has a normal one, so like, he's editing it to look more like his headspace form lol

The sweater was a handmade gift from Basil that Sunny got so attached to he ended up inventing Tulip about it. The "real version" of the sweater was always kind of a blank space to me though because it was really hard for me to decide what it would look like, what Basil would make and what Basil thought Sunny would like while not being too complicated or too dull. The last clear draft I made of it was purple, which I wanted to avoid bc that's Mari's color... but all the blue options were also weird..





In the final version I made it more of a darker green because that's a basil color and it has some little embroidery on it. I think it's the version I am most happy with definitely.

Birthday art also includes the undershirt bc while Tulip can get away with wearing like nothing in Headspace he should probably be a little more dressed up for outdoors XD

And last a cute art by Sage Tia!  Basil plushie appearance appreciated. This one is the most chibi and cute, I think. The background is very pretty for him and evokes that romance feeling.

Well its because I have one last birthday present for Tulip boy, and it's definitely the biggest one.......... I gave him a baby brother!

In my Tulip post I showed this video clipping Omocat's livestream to specifically focus on the history of how Basil was written- his earlier iterations. Tulip was inspired by Flower (or fanart of Flower) specifically appearance wise, and then after Flower was Rowan.

As a TL;DW,  Rowan was created based on the idea of "What if someone was mad that Sunny left". He was a little petty jerk who was sad and angry all the time. The problem with him is that all the scenes with him turned out bad, so then Omocat had the thought "what if he was incapable of hating Sunny no matter how hard he tried" and Basil was born.

Genuinely Basil is one of the most facinating characters I've ever seen in any media ever, especially the role he plays in the story, and I think hearing about how he was developed really puts a lot of pieces together on how such a complex characters was made and written.

Tulip originally took design elements from Flower, the first iteration of Basil, and so Rowan being the second iteration I thought it's cute to draw them together :P

The first time I drew a version of Rowan was a few months ago- April in specific

I made this friend called Poloriod Petals on Tumblr who mostly makes OCs out of Omori characters for fun. This used to annoy me 1 year ago but now I'm chill and we chat lmao. Her favorite OC to have made from Omori source material is Rowan, who she likes writing as this dark hair grumpy transmasc guy that sometimes dates some if not all of the Omori cast, specifically a version of Omoriboy the beta version of Omori.



When it comes to fanon Rowan you'll notice a lot of trends. The original Rowan, much similar to Flower, looked basically identical to Sunny because of light skin, short dark hair, and dark eyes. Really not much to tell the difference besides expressions but even then I don't think anyone could fault you for thinking that it was just a drawing of a very angry Sunny. Instead people will often take Basil's unique hairstyle and just colorswap him instead, so he keeps a unique sillohette. They'll also frequently make his skin a shade darker

In late July I was drawing some ponies bc I was bored and sad and I decided to draw some Rowan ponies because I liked his design and thought he was fun to share to Eli lol

Anyways out of the spurr of the moment just trying to think of Rowan-related ideas to keep Polaroid's attention I thought of one very specific scenario




Yep this is the AU now

I used Wormspawn's AU where when Sunny moves Basil doesn't go with him as a base. In that AU Sunny and Basil have frequent contact via phonecalls, but Basil is still really suicidal after the ending because of his parents coming back and his friends feeling tepid about him at best and not fitting in anywhere. His parents talk about moving him away or sending him to a troubled teens program and he just point blank tells them he'd kill himself if they do that. It's not really a pretty situation at all, but Basil does sort of manage and his parents just agree to live with him and keep a eye on him for the time being. Hero's out of town, Kel's sort of mixed but obviously cares about Basil so sets it aside to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid, and Aubrey despite everything still really deeply regrets bullying him and tries to make up for it (though Basil has PTSD from bullying so there's only so close she can get without making it worse)

People still bully and gossip about Basil, though it's not Aubrey or her immediate friend group. The main rumors circulating around are about how he "stabbed a boy in the eye for not liking him back" so homophobia, still. Aubrey does argue against these rumors, but since she's the one that started making Basil a target in the first place people aren't super keen to listen to her and just see her as getting weak willed or going back on her word instead. Sucks!!!

Rowan in this AU is a complete and utter stranger. Zero relation to any of the main cast. Never seen, heard, or talked to any of them. He only just moved here! I sometimes joke he moved into Sunny's house but I don't think I'm serious about that XD

His parents are divorced (like every Omori character's) and he lives with his Dad who for the most part completely ignores him and pretends he doesn't exist. He's somewhat wealthy, but he doesn't give Rowan an allowance or anything so he doesn't really benefit from it. Often his Dad will bring over random girlfriends and just ask for Rowan to stay out of sight, so he does that. This neglect isn't new, as he was always ignored growing up and would often act out to get attention. He got expelled once. He doesn't have friends, gets into fights, and is a huge loner.

Rowan: Aubrey I must impress upon you how weird Basil is.
Rowan: When I met him I was not “defending a poor innocent kid from bullies”, I was picking a fight. I thought them saying the blond kid stabbed someone in the face sounded stupid and wanted to fight.
Rowan: I was pretty obviously not in it for Basil. I didn’t talk to him, I didn’t ask if he was ok, I didn’t help him up.
Rowan: And then he was following me everywhere telling me his life story for hours kissing the floor where I walked and curling his golden locks in his finger like a schoolgirl asking me for my phone number.
Rowan: That is not normal. I always knew that.



Most people would find Basil's behavior annoying. Rowan, however, since he's usually very neglected and no one cares about him was kind of flattered and curious? So he kept hanging out with Basil and learning more about him. After meeting him he kiiiiiind of believes in the rumors a little XD

Basil, casually: Oh I did take his eye out the untrue part is just him not liking me back
Rowan: ... Cool 👍

He's really nice though! Rowan's deal is that he only really acts as agressive as you do, so if you're a totally nice sweetie angel he'll probably be nice back. One example I used is how he'd typically complain about watching girly movies and call them dumb and boring, but like, around Basil he doesn't need to? Because it's not like he believes that. Why would he make Basil sad for no reason, it's not like Basil's done anything. So he'll just sit boy and let himself not be an edgy teen boy about it lol

Despite the amount of time they hang out together, Rowan may know a lot about Basil but Basil knows very little about Rowan. This is because Rowan is just the type of guy who doesn't have much to say, partly because he stopped thinking developing his own opinions matter very much. As such talking to him can be like talking to a brick wall.

Basil: So what movie do you want to watch :3?
Rowan: I dunno
Basil: Ummm okie, well do you like this genre?
Rowan: I don't know, do you?

Thankfully Basil is used to Sunny so this is an improvement actually

When I write Basil I write him with BPD so in short Rowan is deeefinitely Basil's new FP fixation. I think this is a good thing for Sunny and Basil because it helps show their relationship when it isn't super clouded and they can be normal people at each other haha. Sunny and Basil are also GAY here but long distance so it's big huge stupid problem. In this instance Sunny is actually pretty happy to hear about Rowan- rather than jealous, because mostly he just doesn't want Basil to kill himself so another guy looking out for him is excellent news. I also think he'd be fine with Basil dating Rowan because he kind of knows he occupies an irreplacable niche in Basil's head and doesn't feel super threatened by some romantic conflict. And neither does Basil and Rowan is just confused to get attention at all so he isn't any more than confused about Basil already having a boyfriend XD

Rowan's thoughts on Basil's other friends starts out as pretty low, even though Basil speaks of them highly. He thinks Sunny sounds like a jerk for having just disappeared for years while Basil clearly missed him and thinks Basil is too forgiving. Then he actually meets Sunny and realizes "Oh, Basil actually fucking maimed him and he's still friends with him. Sunny is really cool actually for doing that" and chills out.

Kel he doesn't have many opinions on because Kel just sort of laughs off Rowan which makes him uncomfortable and not know what to say. He thinks Kel could probably be there for Basil more but doesn't really have any negative thoughts beyond that.

Aubrey is extremely combative and the two of them clash constantly with no end in sight

Aubrey is extremely suspicious of Rowan for being suspicious. She only really sees the argumentative petty preformative side of Rowan so thinks he's probably just using Basil because he's vulnerable. Rowan is predictably annoyed by this accusation and thinks Aubrey sucks because she bullied Basil for four years. Some of these arguments are funny and some of them are not.

Rowan, again, doesn't feel that deeply about Aubrey. He'd be pretty quick to never say anything mean again if she stopped too. He just acts "bad" because everyone expects him to be that way, so why defeat expectations? Especially when Aubrey keeps accusing him of heinous shit, he's just like. Fine. Sure. I'll be that guy. Whatever. But it's not a deep cut.

Once Aubrey figures this out about him and that he's not actually hurting Basil, they can chill a little.

Aubrey then immediately tries to cover up by saying that she just said it as a dumb rumor and Basil's only upset because he's scared about her starting rumors again nothing more. SHE DOESN'T WANT TO RUIN ANYTHING SHE WAS JUST JEALOUS WAHHHH but Basil ends up kind of slipping it was real anyways which kind of freaks Rowan out for reasons that are hard to pinpoint. Mostly it's that while the eye stabby thing Basil just casually dropped this time everyone is freaking out like it's a big deal so he thinks it's a big deal. But he's completely quiet on it because he's not convinced it's his business.

I think if Basil and Rowan know each other long enough/it’s enough of a question (like there was a discussion about it that got shut down) Sunny and Basil would tell him a short version of what happened. Basil can’t tell the story on his own bc he still thinks it’s not his place and also emotional support. It might also be cathartic in some way to term the story to a nonjudgemental stranger

Rowan’s main thoughts would be "OHHH THAT’S WHY YOU’RE SO WEIRD ABOUT EACH OTHER" bc Sunny and Basil clearly not boyfriends to him they’re weird. Basil is not like Sunny like he is to him and is deeply evasive when discussing him.

IS HE INTERESTING DO YOU LIKE HIM Maybe now is the time I break down my pony design lol. There are definitely some features I have not pointed out that may come up as surprising. First of those being his color pallet's origins.

Yeah I designed him originally as Basil's sibling. Back in April when I first made him it was a crackfic AU where Rowan was like his estranged brother. You can kind of see it when I point it out but they really don't share anything other than eye color just because the parents give you so much to choose from, haha. I just went for the edgiest thing I could do with the color pallets provided. That's also why Rowan is a pegasus lmao. They took him and not Basil due to that XD I haven't thought to change his design because I find it kind of funny and because you'd really never know unless you were told.

The cutiemark is basically what I'd give Stranger if I were forced to give him something original. It doesn't really have meaning as far as the Rowan character goes, aside from being "locked up" emotionally. I kind of like it though, the vagueness reminds me of Omori's lightbulb cutiemark. "r u a locksmith lmao" it just feels like he'd have something vague like that.

All this pony talk made me want to redesign him as a human, though! I could use the standard fanon design but idk he doesn't really replace Basil so it would be kind of weird for him to be a Sonic OC recolor of him. Plus he's so original tbh renaming him might not be a bad idea so it's less confusing for anyone deep in the fandom. He could just be like... an OC OC.... that initially had inspiration from Rowan........... Or something........................

Rowanboy!! And loose curls Basil. I think I really like giving Basil loose curls because it just feels like a mildly realistic way to adapt his hair, since it keeps that anime poof. Also it's cute.

I decided to make Rowan mixed race (black mom white dad) because I felt like it matched a lot of the story he already had, specifically his feelings of otherness and expecting to be seen as scary while still not fitting in with other (whiter) groups of bullies. He's more brown than he is black but he does have the curly hair and dark eyes. He doesn't braid his hair because 1. He can't be damned and 2. He wasn't actually taught. He cuts it himself so he puts it in a messy ponytail or bun instead of making it extremely short like a lot of transmasc people would default to because if he did that it'd look like more of an obvious hackjob. It's also like how people often just make Rowan "Basil, but dark" and I was like "ok but... darker"

I tried to make one (1) singular picrew and immediately understood every single person's complaints about there never being enough black hair options. They have like 3 maximum and you're never going to find "messy unbraided bun" in there.

I also find the visual image of Basil following him around even funnier now "tf is this white boy doing here" pff. Maybe Basil will get permission to do his hair :P

This is so interesting! Thank you for sharing this backstory. To be honest, Basil didn't really grab me when I first played Omori, but your passion for his character really gave me a new appreciation of him.
